All Turns to Silver Glass [Mar 16th 2009, 10:11 pm]

Well, folks, we have had a good run with Operation Gathering. With your help and encouragement we were able to pay all guests who were owed following the Gathering of the Fellowship, 2006. We also reimbursed most of the other guest-related expenses. Before we finish our quest and sail into the West we will be having a fire sale to disburse all of our remaining raffle items.

We want to profusely thank EVERYONE who has made a contribution to Operation Gathering. Be it purchasing raffle items, donating items from your collection, or simply offering kind words of support you have kept us going these long years.

Here is how our fire sale will work: We will have a goal of selling as many raffle tickets as we can by April 15, 2009. On that date ALL items will go, regardless of how many raffle tickets they have on them. We still have some great items available. If you are a collector, now is the time. This last-ditch effort will be to pay off what is one of our most important guest-related expenses...one of our own who gave selflessly so everyone could enjoy a certain guest who shall remain unnamed. We are so close to our goal...Can you help?

The Operation Gathering Team

Finalists For Short Film Awards 2008 Announced

The two finalists for the this year's Show Me Shorts Best Film award are 'Noise Control' by Phill Simmonds and 'Serial Killer' by Bruno du Bois.

Phill Simmonds and his brother Jeff won the award last year for their film 'A Very Nice Honeymoon'. 'Noise Control' is a comedic animated documentary about a kindergarten's pet rooster that is shot by a noise control officer. 'Serial Killer' is a scary thriller about a French family on holiday in New Zealand who get lost and run out of petrol.

The two finalists for the Best Student Film award are, 'Calici: A Rural Conspiracy' by Claudia Babirat and 'Animal Instincts' by Cameron Edser and Michael Richards. 'Calici' is a documentary about how Kiwi farmers illegally introduced the rabbit killing virus in the early 90's. 'Animal Instincts' is an animated comedy about a cow and a sheep at war.
The finalists in the Atlab Best Technical Contribution category are Roseanne Liang for editing the comedic 'Take 3' about three Asian actresses facing racism at auditions, and Cameron Edser and Michael Richards for animating 'Animal Instincts.'

The Panavision Special Jury Prize can be awarded for any aspect of the filmmaking process. This year the finalists are Baudouin du Bois for writing 'Serial Killer' and Heather Diprose for Art Direction on the armchair-travel drama 'Betty Banned Sweets.'

New Zealand Actors settle New Line LawSuite [Oct 8th 2008, 08:27 pm]

New Zealand actors settle out of court with New Line
October 8th, 2008 by MrCere

Good friend, good actor and good man Bruce Hopkins has checked in with some news regarding a financial settlement with New Line. In an exclusive he gives us the lowdown. Here it in his own words:
I trust you are well amidst the heady brew of global financial markets and looming elections!
I wish to inform you that 16 mths after a lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court of Los Angeles, against New Line Cinema, on behalf of 15 NZ actors who played various featured roles in the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, the action has been settled out of court.
The action related to a contract clause concerning a residual share of net revenues earned from merchandise bearing the likeness of each actors character in the films. As you will be aware these films and their associated merchandise achieved record levels of earnings both at the box office and in merchandising.
I personally began this action over 4 years ago and was advised by an LA entertainment lawyer I had met, Phillip Rosen, to enlist as many NZ actors as I could to take part in the initial approach to New Line.
However after a lack of satisfactory response and then being informed that all of the characters merchandising had achieved significant financial losses to the company, Phillip Rosen enlisted the aid of one of LA’s most respected litigators, attorney Henry Gradstein. At this point the decision was taken to file suit in the Superior Court of LA. The suit was lodged mid 2007 and approximately 2 months ago on advice from Phillip Rosen, and in consultation with our agents, we agreed on a mutually acceptable settlement out of court.
As part of the settlement, details cannot be discussed. I will however put my neck on the line and say that the final settlement amounts are more in keeping with what was in the petty cash drawer at head office when the decision to settle was made!
A couple of actors may be able to have a decent holiday this year, while most will simply be able to buy some new board shorts, a couple of bottles of nice wine and maybe get a haircut in anticipation of their next role in a record breaking global blockbuster!
The fact that a couple of other actors chose to not be involved, fearing it could damage their names in the Hollywood scene is testament to the reality that coming on board to take this action took courage. The actors involved in the case were; Noel Appleby, Jed Brophy, Mark Ferguson, Ray Henwood, Bruce Hopkins, William Johnson, Nathaniel Lees, Sarah McLeod, Ian Mune, Paul Norell, Craig Parker, Robert Pollock, Martyn Sanderson, Peter Tait and Stephan Ure.

It should be noted that he settlement has come a little late for the wonderful Noel Appleby, who played the role of hobbit, Everard Proudfoot in the first film of the trilogy. Toward the end of 2007, Noel passed on after weathering a battle with cancer.

cheers,.. ahhh the joys of spring

Letter and favor from Bruce [Sep 16th 2008, 11:48 pm]

[ mood | tired ]

Sorry to be so long in getting this out. It's been sitting in my inbox for several days. I've been out of town and then too pooped! Getting old sucketh big time!!!

Gidday folks,Bruce Hopkins here, straight to the point, I have a favour to ask, I have posted a link below to the movie industry web site imdb. I am
asking that anyone who has seen or knows of the award winning independent digital feature " 1nite", go to the page I have linked to and sign up ( for free ), so that comments can be posted regarding the film etc. This is one way of boosting 1nites rating on the site which all helps in trying to get some distribution for the film. My aim is to generate enough income from this film to enable the cast and the 2 crew/makers of the film Amarbir and Cristobal, to get paid.I took part as an actor but came on board trying to promote the film when I saw the incredible result Amarbir and Cristobal achieved with no equipment other than a canon XL1 camera and a spend of
approximately $400.00!!! I truely believe this film deserves to be out there getting some mileage and in a perfect world generating some income for the all
concerned. I have had it screened on sites such as americafreetv.com, the Arts
and Rialto Channels here in NZ, but basically we need to try and secure a distribution deal, which will then make it easier to get 1nite onto the books
of DVD rental companies etc, as well as retail outlets. Here is the link, so if you have the time or the inclination it would be much appreciated

Operation Gathering UPdate [Sep 9th 2008, 06:47 am]

Greetings from Middle Earth! It has been a while since our last update. Things are winding down for us at Operation Gathering. Over the past 2 years we have come together in the true spirit of Tolkien fans to do what was right. Thanks to your help and support we have nearly achieved our goal!

We are now working on our final programming expense. Without this person's contribution the convention would have been missing a wonderful guest, and would possibly have not taken place at all.

We truly appreciate your kind words, encouragement, donations, and raffle ticket purchases. We have come this far together and it has truly been a privilege.

Please join us in our quest to make things right by taking a look at all the items we currently have up for raffle now. Many of these items are only 1 or 2 raffle tickets shy of being ready to go.

We are very close...The end is near!

In fellowship,
Elda, Talasi, Heather, Zee

Bruce has a new movie [Aug 20th 2008, 06:54 pm]

[ mood | chipper ]

Yes he does. It's an Aussie film - called Sleeper - and his role appears to be a large, juicy one.

Now if we can only get it released over on our side of the pond...

operation Gathering silliness and raffles [Mar 18th 2008, 06:53 am]

Elrond stands by the arched window, looking out across his realm, when he hears the voice of Galadriel, a soft and gentle voice drifting through his mind, tugging for his attention.

Galadriel: The support of the people is growing. They sense the goal is close. The need for Operation Gathering is near to achieving their end. In his heart, Frodo begins to desire the bracelet. The quest will cost him money. You know this. You have foreseen it. It is the risk we all took.

Elrond nods, pulling out his wallet, words were unnecessary.

Galadriel: At the end of the Gathering convention, the need to sell items became necessary. They work hard now to get the debts paid.

Elrond: The time for the Elves and Men to help is now.

Galadriel: "We shall not let the debts go...unpaid."

Elrond: Nay, I shall send aid, buying raffles for the Haldir figure should help.

Galadriel: And I shall buy the banner, for it is new and precious to me.

Good day everyone.

Just a little silliness to begin this weeks newsletter.
Hope you're all well and enjoying some sunny spring weather.

Sad New and Happy news [Oct 20th 2007, 08:43 am]

[ mood | awake ]

I've been very busy and unable to take time to update anything, my own LJ, much less here or LOTW, but I wanted to pass two things along.

First, I'm sad to pass along that Bruce's father passed about week before last. He had just turned 80. The family had been up two weeks ago for his bday party, and apparently they buried him a week later, last week. This is a little amusing, apparently he had a heart attack while watching the rugby game and his little grandson (Bruce's nephew) is telling people that the All-Blacks killed his grandfather. To hear Bruce talk, they gave him a wonderful, rousing farewell.

Second, I heard this last month and just haven't had time to pass it along... Bruce is going to be a grandfather. I think that's what he said.

So I want to pass along my Condolances as well as my congratulations.

Bruce news [Jul 14th 2007, 11:21 pm]

[ mood | content ]

Hey guys! I hope everyone's summer is going wonderfully! I'm having a great time, enjoying my first real vacation in eons. Strange, I live near the beach and where am I for my vacation? On the beach! But Spawn, DH and I are having a wonderful time. I can't believe I have to report back to work a week from Wednesday. These seven weeks flew by too fast! I'd complain about the shortness, but we get a full week off for Thanksgiving and we have three weeks off at Christmas, plus Spring break and quite a few other holidays. I can't complain about that!

I had to have some emergency dental work done yesterday evening (I lost a filling) so DH made me stay in and enjoy the lortab I was given. So while dinking around on his computer, I was able to pick up Bruce's radio show this morning for a little while and I wanted to pass some info along. He's going to be in Canada next month, filming a Western. He didn't say who what when where why or how many lines or what not, but he did mention he was the only Kiwi. Either how, good for him!

It doesn't look as if he'll be at Dragoncon. I've been told by the Track Director not to completely give up hope, but... they've signed Sean Astin and he's very expensive. I don't know about you guys, but it just seems to me (and this is just my opinion, so don't take it as gospel) that the DC people are trying to whittle the Tolkien track down.

I've got two 4 day passes and will be asking for that Friday off so I can enjoy some of the parties. I've been asked to sit a fanfiction panel again (last year's was a blast and I'm really looking forward to it!) so that will be fun! As in the past, I'll be taking lots of pictures. We've had the digital serviced and bought a Super Chip - 1 Gig, so it will hold over 1000 pictures. I can't wait to try it out! (And of course, I'll share!)

Still. Wish Bruce were going.
